Fishermen Deliver Twenty Baby Hammerhead Sharks From Their Dying Mother

Earlier this week, an occurrence happened to a group of fishermen off the coast of Florida that they will surely never forget. Shortly after they caught a full grown hammerhead shark, they realized that she was actually pregnant, injured and her babies were trying to escape through a large wound on her torso!

After wresting with the twelve foot fish for hours, the group of fishermen were finally able to reel her in. Shortly after pulling her in, they realized that she was seriously injured and noticed a small tail sticking out of one of the larger wounds on her body. They assumed that the wound on the mother hammerhead was caused by a fight with another shark because it appeared to be a bite mark.

The fishermen watched as the suffering mother tried to birth the pups, but was sadly not able to muster the strength to do so. After already being injured, then thrashing about with the fishermen for hours, it was obvious that she wouldn’t be able to do so on her own. The fishermen knew what had to be done.

They pulled out the baby sharks one by one until all twenty were removed and released back into the ocean to begin their new lives. One of the fishermen, named Campos, said, “I stood in the water for a couple of seconds to make sure they swam off good. I held them and as soon as I put them out, voom! They took off.” Sadly, but not unexpectedly, the mother passed away shortly after the this occurrence, but these fishermen did a great deed for this species of shark. Hammerheads have become an endangered species and after this, twenty more of the species will hopefully live on and help repopulate.
